North Korea has not much of a film industry, so this look at Korean movies is strictly limited to those works produced in South Korea. The film industry experienced a huge boom years, and this success has taken over the late 1990s into the new millennium. Projects boasting high production values, original and challenging storylines and many talented and attractive actors, Korean movies have gained international recognition with no signs of slowing down.
The following list gives an introduction into the cinema South Korea. You'll notice that the oldest movie on the list was published in 1998, but this was a deliberate choice on my part. I want to get viewers unfamiliar foreign movies that are interested, and I suspect that including Korean movies from the 60's and 70's not the best way to go about this.
Oldboy (2003) - Second film director Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy Oldboy tells the story of a businessman Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik). Captures and arrested in a hotel room for unknown reasons, released after 15 years and he tasked with finding the identity of his captor. What follows is a sinfully beautiful tale of revenge and forbidden love. Voters on CNN called it one of the 10 best Asian movies of all time, and it's drawn rave reviews of Quentin Tarantino.
Attack the gas station (1999) - A gang of thugs sympathetic, rob is a gas station at the beginning of the film, and then turn around and to deprive it again the next night. But this time the Manager which hidden cash and kidnap the Quartet of hooligans who staff, the gas pump, and keep the money. How the clubs fight police officers and deadbeat customers, become more sympathetic and learn a few things about yourself.
Barking dogs never bite (2000) Turns the directorial debut of Bong Joon-ho ("the host"), this film to an out-of-work College-Professor, the wall of the barking dogs in his apartment complex driven. The quiet family (1998) - Combination is horror and dark comedy, Korean film about a family opened a lodge for hikers, but your customers die at the end. Korean stars Song Kang-ho and Choi Min-sik co-star.
Joint security area (2002) - When two soldiers in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea are killed, is a special investigative unit in the truth in the shipped. Quentin Tarantino named it one of his 20 favorite movies since 1992.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) - Following final movie in the Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy, the motion picture a mild-mannered woman released from imprisonment for the murder of a schoolboy. As it turns out that spent was you innocent, and every day in prison a day that was plotting revenge against the man, who was actually guilty of the crime. A delicious tale of revenge and high heel pumps.
The host (2006) - An average Korean family nearly torn apart, when your youngest member and drugs in the sewer of a mutated amphibious monster. Combine their talents together seek to save the girl and destroy the loathsome creature. Director Bong Joon-ho, it's the highest grossing Korean film of all time.
Sympathy for Mr. vengeance (2002) - The first film in Park Chan-wook's excellent vengeance trilogy, sympathy leads to a look a deaf man trying to get a kidney for his sister. If things work don't he accesses kidnap the young daughter of a Exekutive--with tragic results.
Shiri (1999) - Is the Korean version of a Hollywood action movie, Shiri a team of North Korean agents intent on wreaking havoc against their southern neighbours. Their most successful Member is a female sniper in South Korea as a sleeper agent for years, a number of government officials pick during this time.
